Red Paper Boats

Script Writer and Director

Red Paper Boats is a devised ensemble piece that follows Alex, a student trying to write her college essay but finding herself lost in memories of her childhood friend, Lily. Through a series of magical flashbacks, each triggered by a folded red paper boat, Alex revisits moments of friendship, regret, and grief, discovering that stories, like paper, can hold both fragility and strength.

Inspired by the APAC 2024 theme: 千里之行,始于足下 (A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step) we explore how grief, memory, and creation all begin with small acts of courage: one fold, one letter, and one step toward healing.

As the writer, director, and performer of Red Paper Boats, I wanted to explore how memory and mourning live inside ordinary gestures.

Visually, the show used warm, nostalgic lighting, origami props that multiplied across the stage, and split staging to show past and present existing side by side. Our team created a tone that was intimate yet surreal, where every paper boat carries a piece of love that endures.
