Directing And Then There Were None was my first experience leading a full-scale production as well as SAS’s first ever student-directed production. What began as a dream turned into a full creative and logistical manifestation: from concept development, casting, design meetings to casting, marketing, rehearsals, budgeting, and late-night production planning.

For years, I’ve stood on stage as an actor, trusting my director to guide the story. This time, I found myself on the other side of that table, learning to see the stage through a different lens alongside my co-director Hao Hsu.

We reimagined Agatha Christie’s classic as a reflection on paranoia, morality, and survival. Approaching the play as a stylized, presentational mystery that was almost self-aware. We leaned into the absurdity of its structure while keeping the tension alive.

We wanted the audience to act like detectives: watching for clues, reading gestures, suspecting everything and everyone. The performances walked a fine line between theatrical caricature and emotional truth, highlighting both the humor and horror of human guilt.

Production

What's so special about this production was that it was completely created and run by students. Working closely with peer crew leaders across lighting, sound, costumes, set, and makeup, making collaborative choices. From how to “age” our high school actors to the exact timing of recording. Our creative process was built on conversation, testing, and research on the 1930s.

A Huge shoutout to the student crew heads involved in Lighting (Aaron Li, Austin Wong), Sound (Christy Liu, Rita Lee), Costumes & Makeup (Shanna Lai, Sophia Gong, Jenny Liu, Abi Cheng, Lisa Yang), Set Design (Hao Hsu, Jianna Advani)
